Frequently asked Questions
How long can I expect the raised planters to last?
With 22-gauge galvanized steel side panels, our planters are 2-3 times thicker than most competitors. We expect our planters to outlast the gardener. (Most metal raised bed companies claim a 15 to 20+ year lifespan.) Our material is made in the USA and considerably thicker than others.
How to care for your raised beds.
Galvanized steel can resist weather for a very long time. Cleaning the panels can easily be completed by spraying with a garden hose. Bleach can be used on unknown stains. This is not required however bird droppings and decaying plants against the steel can cause a white haze to form if left. This is normal with galvanized steel and normally occurs when decaying organic matter is allowed to sit against the steel.
Do not allow tomatoes or other high acidic fruits to fall and decay against the panels. Acid will eventually remove the protective coating. (This happened in our greenhouse a few years back. Several gallons worth of cherry tomatoes blanketed the soil after they rotted and fell from the vine. This left several small patches of rust on the inside of the bed. I cleaned the rust spots and applied a sealant on some. Others I am observing to see how they impact the planter over time.) This situation occurred out of neglect. Normally we harvest before it rots!
How thick is your steel?

Where do I purchase my soil mix?
We suggest checking with your local nursery or landscape business. Normally these suppliers will sell a raised bed mix for $100 per cubic yard (27 cubic feet).

Hopkins' family raised garden
May 6th 2025

Adding a new water feature this year.
A 55 gallon drum was cut down to form a 20 gallon tank.

Taking shape!
After filling with our soil mix I can decorate.

A false bottom holds rock and plants. The water drains into the drum and is moved back up using a pump and a solar panel mounted above.

I enjoy having one double stacked planter. However, if you fill the entire 36" with soil you will see massive compaction. We suggest using gravel in the lower planter to minimize compaction.
Let customers speak for us
from 19 reviewsI bought two 84x42 and two 42x42 beds. My husband, an engineer, and I were impressed by the undeniable quality of these beds. We love the overall look once we added cedar boards. They exceeded our expectations in every way.

The entire experience ordering, receiving, and assembling this kit was very satisfactory. It is a very strong and robust design, and tolerances were as stated. One of my long side panels was slightly damaged during shipping, creating a small "buckling" in the panel. The damage was not structural, and even with the slight dimensional change, I was able to readily assemble the kit. The folks at Hopkins rapidly responded to my contacts with them and they were more than gracious in addressing the issue. Right now, I have a Basil and Heatmaster tomato plant in the new garden, with several pepper types and one more tomato plant to add, as soon as their "sun break-in" period is over. I highly recommend this product from this supplier and would not hesitate to purchase another kit, should my gardening abilities grow beyond this present moment.

Hopkins Homestead Store raised beds are the Cadillac on the market! The quality of the materials and their appearance is unmatched. The wood bracket kit is just an added bonus to make your raised bed more aesthetic and functional. No more kneeling by the bed or awkwardly sitting next to it and trying to tend the garden. Now you have a smooth seat that goes all the way around the raised bed. This is a great add on to a great product!

My wife and I are avid gardeners. In the past we've raised all kinds of fruits and vegetables. As we've gotten older we still enjoy gardening but on a smaller scale and with the control of a raised bed. We saw Hopkins Homestead Store raised beds at our neighbors house and were instantly impressed. The materials, durability, and appearance of the beds was outstanding. Compared to what is on the market online, these raised beds are the top of the line. They are a bit more expensive than what you could by online at Amazon, but truly you get what you pay for. When the kit arrived, it was extremely easy to assemble, and the galvanized steel is clearly meant to last. This is a great product. Thank you, Hopkins Homestead Store!

A well designed garden bed made from top quality material. Assembly was easy.

Very well made parts that were easy to assemble.

All the components of these raised beds are excellent in every way. All the Hopkins customer service is A++++!

Well made. Very organized kit. Extremely satisfied!

We bought 4 42x84 boxes with wood kits. They were very simple to set up. Add in some cedar 2x6's and they look fantastic. People walking by the yard keep saying how great they look. Also a huge bonus that suddenly you have a ton of new seating along with a great garden. Would recommend to everyone.

(1) Super easy to put together. My Mom and I timed ourselves on the second one, it only took us 30 minutes. We were not rushing, just calming putting it together and taking our time. (2) Packing was great and very organized. I was afraid the project was going to overcrowd my garage, but nope. Just opened the box and got everything put together. (3) Customer service was more than I deserve. I asked for it to be deliver on a Friday for Saturday and they did it. (4) The panels area really strong with no bending out like others I have seen.

These are the best quality raised beds I've purchased! I highly recommend to all gardeners looking for good quality raised beds, made in the USA, and that also look great in the garden!

In my opinion a must have. The wood and I like to use cedar makes for a strong High end look..

Beautiful and robust. Exactly what we were looking for. Fast shipping, well-packed. They look great in our garden and will likely provide many years of enjoyment.
